A rare antique Shirvan Bidjov rug with swastika motif border

Code: SHBJ02

Age: 1880-1890

Size
: 150x305cm

Size (ft): 5'0"x10'0"

Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and ivory wool wefts.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: A beautiful shaded indigo field with hook-rimmed and radiating lozenges surrounded by fork vines and a very rare swastika motif main border bring tremendous look to this antique carpet from Shirvan region. Rich and artfully contrasting natural tones. Very good condition.

This is a unique example in terms of the weaver's rendering of classic Bidjov (Bijo) motifs in her own way. Also, this is the only known antique Bijo rug with this specific type of swastika motif main border.

For related antique Bidjov rugs with a similar field layout, see: Siyawouch Azadi "Azerbaijani Caucasian rugs" plate no: 91.
