Antique Heriz carpet, Azerbaijan, NW Iran, 19th century, 9. ft 05 in x 9. ft 09 in (2.87 m x 2.97 m), Nazmiyal Collection

Heriz-Serapi carpets like this with allover designs are less well known than those with grand central medallion compositions, but here the bold dynamic drawing and exquisite use of color are nonetheless classically Heriz. Here the design relies on salient diagonal, leafy fronds in blue, green, and gold that create a latent effect of open diamond medallions, interspersed with large stylized rosettes and smaller flowers. The beauty of the palette is underscored against the dramatic blue-black ground. The more finely drawn rosette and vinescroll border provides the perfect contrast in color and scale to the sweeping grandeur of the field.
