Antique Caucasian Kazak rug, 19th century, NW Azerbaijan

The field of this rare Kazak has been divided into seven box-shaped segments separated by a surrounding border frame. Alternately green or red, the rectangles each contain a hooked diamond enclosing a large central cross as well as animals and stars. The diamonds of the main border, decorated with diagonal arms, are reminiscent of crabs or spiders. Original selvedges, both ends minimally reduced and repiled in places, in good overall condition.
