Antique Caucasian Kazak rug, 19th century, NW Azerbaijan

The field of this rare Kazak has been divided into seven box-shaped segments separated by a surrounding border frame. Alternately green or red, the rectangles each contain a hooked diamond enclosing a large central cross as well as animals and stars. The diamonds of the main border, decorated with diagonal arms, are reminiscent of crabs or spiders. – Original selvedges, both ends minimally reduced and repiled in places, in good overall condition.
