CATALOGUE NOTE
The bold and uncluttered design of this rug, as well as it lustrous wool and use of color set it apart among the corpus of 19th century Kazak weavings. A rug with a very similar border system, although framing a reserve entirely free of design, is illustrated in Herrmann, Eberhart, Von Ushak bis Yarkand, Munich, no. 26. The very supple, blanket-like handle of the rug offered here is also unusual and suggests that it is older than the majority of Kazak weavings.
