by Caspar Netscher
(b. 1639, Prague, d. 1684, The Hague)

The Card Party

c. 1665
Oil on canvas, 50 x 45 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This picture is one of the scenes of fashionable figures in luxurious interiors which Netcher painted from the mid-1660s. The painting is indebted in some degree to the artist's teacher, Gerard Terborch. As in The Suitor's Visit by Terborch, Netcher himself appears to have served as one of the suitors here.
