North West Anatolian rugs & kilims from Balikesir Province

Antique Karakeçili kilim, Balikesir-Bergama Area, Turkey, first half 19th century.

Lot: 43
Karakecili Kilim This blue-ground kilim by the Karakecili from the Balikesir region displays the tribe’s typical design of four powerful, interlocked hooked diamonds, their lateral arms extending as far as the sides. The Karakecili nomads, a Turkic tribe that immigrated from Central Asia, evidently arrived with their distinctive ornaments and retained these. The example offered here is meticulously woven, with many brocaded ‘S’-forms. A very similar kilim is in the collection of the Vakiflar Museum in Istanbul (no. 39). – Signs of age and wear, minor holes, backed with canvas.
Origin: North West Anatolia, Balikesir region
