Antique South Persian Afshar Rug Featuring Triple Hooked Diamonds on
Indigo Blue & Madder Red Field Code: AFB10S Age: c 1900 Size: 130x155cm Size (ft): 4' 3" x 5' 1" Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and madder red wool wefts. Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Description: The Afshars (or Avshars) represent one of the prominent twenty-four Oghuz Turkic tribes, maintaining a continuous presence across the Iranian plateau for nearly a millennium. In the historical chronicle Jami al-Tawarikh, the scholar Rashid al-Din Hamadani identifies Afshar as the eldest son of Yuldiz (Star) Khan - the third son of Oghuz Khan. The name Afshar traditionally denotes one who is "agile, decisive in action, and zealous in the hunt." Hamadani records the tribe’s ancestral tamga (brand mark) in an "X" configuration and their ongon (sacred totem) as the tavshanjil (the hawk or eagle-owl). (Source: A.Zeki Velidi Togan, Oguz Destani, Reshideddin Oguznamesi, Tercume ve Tahlili, s. 50) Design & Composition: Originating from the Afshar weavers of the Sinjan region, this rug exhibits a striking architectural layout with a rich palette and layered iconography. The composition features a sky-blue field framing a primary mihrab in deep madder red. Enclosed within is a stepped, midnight-blue inner mihrab containing three hooked ivory medallions arranged vertically along the central axis. The field is animated by an array of archaic tribal symbols, including eternal knot motifs (symbolizing longevity), hooked geometric elements, diminutive palmettes, and stylized flowerheads. The composition is framed by a complex system of multiple guard stripes and a dominant main border anchored by a rhythmic Tree of Life motif.
