Antique Karabagh rug
with 'garmagly' hooked motifs
in a red ground Code: AKBG01 Age: circa 1890 Size: 131 x 188 cm Size (ft): 4'4" x 6'2" Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and dark brown wool wefts. Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Description: An exceptional and vibrant antique Karabagh "Garmagly" (hooked) rug featuring a classic Caucasian geometric design. The composition is anchored by a rich madder red ground that beautifully sets off a vertical alignment of 4 hooked archaic lozenges. The field is densely and charmingly populated with an array of geometric flowerhead and star motifs scattered throughout, showcasing the weaver's artistic spontaneity. Framing the central field is a striking ivory ground star meander or 'crab' motif main border, which provides a powerful, crisp contrast. This main border is flanked by delicate dark brown and sky blue sawtooth minor borders, lending an extra layer of geometric precision to the overall framework. Condition Report: Outstanding, full pile overall. The piece remains in excellent condition, preserving its original texture and structural integrity beautifully. Some stains and old repairs consistent with age. Dyes: Woven with all natural, good dyes that display fantastic saturation and authentic, age-softened patina. Notes: Presents with some stains consistent with age and historical use, which do not detract from the overall aesthetic or structural soundness of the piece. A highly collectible example with fantastic wool quality. |
