A small antique Kuba sumakh with the "Palmette and Curled Leaf" design, late 19th century

Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and ivory wool wefts.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Condition: very good

Description: The origin of the design can be traced to Safavid-period carpets featuring stylized plant motifs. Only a very small number of antique Sumak examples with the Bidjov design have survived to the present day. One such example was published by Alberto Boralevi in Sumakh: Tappeti tessuti del Caucaso / Flat-woven Carpets of the Caucasus (1986), plate 23.
