Antique Kuba rug with a red
latticed field Code: KULT01 Age: circa 1900-1910 Size: 103x158cm Size (ft): 3'4''x5'2'' Structure & materials: wool pile, wool warps (natural dark brown and ivory yarns twisted - "salt&pepper") and ivory wool wefts Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Condition: Good condition Design: Red ground with an angular lattice field containing 25 stepped diamonds (resembling a Chodor Ertmen gul), extending top and bottom into arrowheads, outlined in ivory and containing a variety of floral sprigs with some rosettes, florets and comb motifs. The main border carries a so called crab motif, which is in fact a stylized repeated florets connected by radiating lines suggesting crab claws. Rugs with this design were woven in limited quantities in Kuba.
