Old Isfahan "The Garden of Paradise" rug on a silk foundation

Code: IFP0705

Size: 107x178cm

Size (ft): 3'6"x5'10"

Condition: Overall good pile. A few small areas of moth wear.

Structure: wool and silk pile on a silk foundation.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: This is a fine woven Isfahan carpet with a “the Garden of Paradise” design inspired by the eternal paradise gardens of classical Persian art. Set upon a soft beige field, the design unfolds like a poetic vision of nature, harmony, and renewal.

Woven with fine kurk wool and shimmering silk accents on a silk foundation, the rug displays an exceptionally high knot density.

At the bottom of the composition rise two elegant blossoming "Tree of Life" motifs, also called "Derakht-e Zendegi" in Persian literature, surrounded by various flower motifs and delicate vines. The field is enriched with graceful wildlife and symbolic imagery: ducks rest near the lower garden pool, while pairs of birds nest among the flowering branches. Across the upper part of the field, exotic birds appear in flight beneath drifting cloudbands, bringing movement and vitality to the garden scene.

Near the center, two birds face one another in a subtle heart-shaped composition, symbolizing love, unity, and spiritual harmony.

A refined "vase", inspired by celebrated 17th-century Safavid carpets, anchors the composition.

The richly detailed main border depicts rabbits, gazelles, nightingales and other birds, and wild animals wandering through floral foliage, echoing the imagery of paradise and abundance found in classical Isfahan masterpieces.

A dark blue minor border adorned with small bird motifs frames the carpet beautifully and enhances the delicacy of the overall design.

The palette is composed of soft natural shades - ivory, beige, sky blue, and gentle earth tones - creating an atmosphere of serenity and elegance.

Combining the artistry of traditional Isfahan weaving with the symbolism of Persian paradise gardens, this vintage “Garden of Paradise” rug is both a decorative masterpiece and a celebration of nature, beauty, and eternal life.
