Kazak rug with star medallions CODE: KZST333 Size: 115x165cm Size (ft): 3'9"x5'5" Area: 1.89 m2 Density: 105 000 knots per square meter, totally ~200 000 knots Colors: red, green, sage green, yellow, navy blue, dark brown, ivory, medium blue, sky blue, maroon. Dyes: madder, weld (Reseda Luteola), cochineal, onion skins, indigo, pomegranate skins, walnut husks, natural dark brown sheep wool, natural ivory sheep wool. Materials: Handcarded and handspun wool for pile, ivory wool warps and red wool wefts (two shots). 1cm of flatwoven kilim ends at both sides. - wool on wool Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Pile height: 0.6cm Ends: horizontally and vertically plaited fringes Inscriptions: 1442 (weaving date), tamga (tribal seal) of Afshar tribe (left side, inside the main border). The word "Karabagh" is woven with ancient Orkhon Yenisei scripts ![]() Weaver: Sevda Weaving Period: 4 months Design: The powerful combination of the three star medallions with the Borchaly ("Bordjalu") border create a good harmony together in this rug. The design and colour are harmoniously balanced and the inclusion of a number of minor motifs such as swastika, comb, hooked elements show the informal characteristics of village weaving. Note: A late 19th Kazak rug with a similar design was sold for $26 450 at Sotheby's New York in 7 April, 1999. Another example was sold at Christie's 6 April 2006 for GBP 31,200.
