Antique Karabagh dragon verneh ("sileh") flatweave rug

Code: KRBVRN02

Age: mid 19th century

Size
: 190x250cm

Size (ft): 6'2"x8'2"

Structure: wool on wool. Warps: red wool; Z2S; wefts: foundation: red wool; Z2S; 1 shoot after each row of soumak; soumak part: wool - Z2S

Technique: soumak plain and countered

Design: Field: 4 bands of 4 "S' forms in ivory and dark blue all filled with small, variously coloured S shapes; against a madder red ground resulting in a highly graphic composition with a great sense of contrast. ‘S’ forms here are meant to represent dragons and evidence for this may be seen in the wispy tails and ears of the ‘s’ forms in this piece. In the top and lower space of each dragon there are three tribal motifs resembling an hourglass. Border: reciprocal arrow heads in blue.

Description: Early example with all good colors. A rare example with bird figures inside the dragons
