Antique Kuba Khan Konagkend rug in a dark blue ground

Code: KUKON01J

Age: late 19th century

Size
: 100x120cm

Size (ft): 3'3"x3'11"

Structure: wool on wool.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: The design combines a sophisticated graphic sensibility with an elevated sense of color and contrast to create a composition which is sheer visual dynamism. The field uses the classic Konagkend geometric stylization of arabesque drawing reminiscent of earlier classical Ottoman ‘Lotto’ types but with a distinctly local flare. Within both the positive and negative spacing of the contrasting dark indigo and colorful sections of the field a host of vegetal and bird forms may be discerned. A natural dark brown ground classic ‘Kufic’ border frames the central field.

Low pile, both ends repaired.
