Karabagh rug with 'turtle' medallions, so called "Lenkoran" design

Size (ft): 3'10"x5'2"

Area: 1.86 m2

Density: totally ~300 000 knots

Colors: green, red, ivory, honey yellow, maroon, sky blue, light navy blue, light brown, dark brown, apricot, hazelnut.

Dyes: madder, weld (Reseda Luteola), onion skins, indigo, pomegranate skins, walnut husks, natural dark brown sheep wool, natural ivory sheep wool, natural medium brown sheep wool.

Materials: Handcarded and handspun wool for pile, dark brown and ivory wool warps (natural dark brown and ivory yarns twisted - "salt & pepper") and ivory wool wefts (two shots). 1cm of flatwoven kilim ends at both sides. - wool on wool

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Pile height: 0.4cm

Ends: five rows of decorative knotted meshwork

Design: The palmettes in the field are the descendants of the great Lotus palmettes of early (XVI-XVIII c) Sunburst & Dragon rugs. Rugs with this design have mistakenly been attributed to Lenkoran. The original weaving area is the south of Karabagh and Moghan regions.

Javanshir people (Javanshir Eli) were a Turkic clan in Karabakh, who belonged to the Afshar tribe and were in turn a branch of the Oghuz Turks. Between 1748 and 1822, members of the Javanshir clan functioned as the head of the Karabakh Khanate. Sarijali is a subgroup (oymaq) of Javanshir tribe. Other oymaqs of the Javanshir tribe were Yaglavend, Mafruzlu, Ibаdi, Sоfulu, Dedeli, Tаmetli, Gеjegözlü, Sеyidahmedli, Qаribend, Кöçerli, Behmenli, Demirli, Seyidmahmudlu, Sabir, Goymehemmed, Sheykhbabali, Molla Fazilli, Qaraburunlu. The rulers of the Karabagh Khanate were from the Sarijali oymak.
