Antique Bakshaish (Bakshaiesh, Bakhshaish, Bakhshayesh) rug, Azerbaijan, NW Iran.

Lot: 122
Bakhshaish - This small-format Bakhshaish belongs to a group of pictorial rugs that includes only a very few known examples. At the upper end of the field, a huge blue bird surrounded by flowering branches, its wings spread wide and its head turned to one side, sits on a design panel ascending towards it in a curve, appearing like a ladder. Its long tail feathers hang down vertically beyond the centre of the field. In the characteristic style of Bakhshaish rugs, all the designs have been represented in a geometric, abstract form. A closely related bird rug was sold by us in 1994. – Both ends somewhat reduced, new overcasting along the sides. Low pile.
