Antique Daghestan / Derbend prayer rug, 19th century, 4'5 x 5'0", Claremont Rug Company

This exciting collector’s piece reveals the weaver’s fascination with designs from neighboring areas, which she combined to dynamic effect. The radiating boteh motifs in the field emanate an aspiring quality while the freeform drawing of the border design, which virtually disappears along the top edge, adds a sense of playfulness. Offering magically time-softened colors, this piece is well-preserved at 125 years of age.
