A rare antique Kuba rug, mid 19th century, Northern Kuba Region, North East Azerbaijan

Lot 65 Kuba rug, 19th century
ESTIMATE: 6000 EUR
SOLD: 12000 EUR
East Caucasus, Kuba region, 19th century Size: 116 x 81 cm

Produced in the northern Kuba region (or in Daghestan?), this small carpet with a golden-yellow ground and a design that has obviously been influenced by Shahsavan sumakhs (S-shaped stylised dragons in the field, Syrga border) is possibly unique. In 1979 it was published by Herrmann and reappeared in Engelhardt’s book in 1990. – In good condition, considering its age, small amounts of repiling bottom right, slightly reduced ends, original red selvedges.
