Antique Shirvan Marasali Kabistan prayer rug / namazlyg, Shirvan Region, Azerbaijan. c1890

Lot No. 36
Description
Shirvan prayer rug,
East Caucasus, ca.130 x 130 cm, 2nd half of the 19th century, the central field is completely filled by a lattice of variously designed flowering shrubs, the red-ground main border with double Z-motifs also recalls carpets from Dagestan, however this carpet does not exhibit layering of the warp and is extremely finely knotted, thus it has to be attributed to the more southerly Shirvan region, its knot quality, age, square size and preservation make it one of the best examples of its group, original ends, the sides newly overcast. (MA) Lit.: Eberhart Herrmann, Seltene Orientteppiche, Vol. V, Plate: 24.
