Antique Hadji Jallili  Tabriz rug, Azerbaijan, NW Iran, 9'6" x 13'2"

Antique carpets with the graceful sophistication and quiet presence of this late 19th century Tabriz are highly sought after. Centered on a stunning elliptical medallion adorned by substantial pendants, a shield shaped reserve is given almost infinite depth by its deep indigo coloring. Exceptionally intricate blossoms fill the foreground of this space, imparting a painterly quality that is hard to resist. Successive layers of ornamentation come together seamlessly in a series of borders and layered corner pieces, united by a common subdued palette and extraordinarily fine drawing.
