Kasim Ushak rug from Karabagh Code: KRBKSM0526 Age: 1880s Size: 124 x 260 cm Size (ft): 4'1" x 8'6" Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and soft red wool wefts. Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Description: This is an approximately 150-year-old historic rug from the Karabagh region, attributed to the Kasim Ushaghy oba — a tribal settlement of semi-nomadic groups in Karabagh (an “oba” referring to a clan-based nomadic or semi-nomadic community structure). The piece belongs to a rare subgroup of Kasim Ushak carpets, of which only a very limited number of examples are known. One such comparable piece is preserved in the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, but the current example is older. The composition is rooted in 18th-century Azerbaijani embroidery traditions, translated here into a highly refined woven design. The field is structured around four vertical axes of elegantly rendered medallions, each containing octagonal star forms and enriched with zoomorphic motifs. The surrounding field is densely populated with tribal symbolic imagery, including animal figures, confronting paired birds and tree motifs. Hooked horn designs further emphasize its archaic, nomadic visual language.
